With most of our usual indoor weekend spots being off limits due to Covid, we have been exploring new activities to do as a family. We recently found a trail in South Mountain Reservation in Essex County that leads to a waterfall. As an inexperienced hiker, I found this trail to be fairly easy, even with two 3 year olds in tow. We didn’t actually make it to the front of the waterfall because we ended up on top of it and didn’t want to risk hiking down the steep sections with the kids, but we enjoyed time at the creek at the top of Hemlock Falls. The hike itself took us about an hour each way with us taking our sweet time along the way. There was enough foot traffic on the trail that at no point did I feel concerned or unsafe. The trails were clearly marked, so it was pretty simple to find our way to and from, although we did ask some other hikers along the path for more detailed directions to the fall. All in all, we had a wonderful time and I look forward to incorporating more family hikes while the weather still allows for it .
