I consider myself a skeptic when it comes to many “new age” trends, but there’s just something about vision boards that keeps me coming back year after year. Perhaps it’s because I find them to actually work! Every January for the last 5-6 years, I take an evening with friends to work on creating my vision board for the new year. It’s a time to connect and reflect on the things I’d like to see happen in the months that follow. The secret to why they work year after year is that the entire exercise forces you to not only think about your goals, but to also then bring them to life on paper through the use of markers, magazine cutouts, pictures, etc…
Vision board vary vastly from person to person, but I find mine to be more about the “mood” I’d like my year to encompass and less about tangible goals (i.e. new house, new car, new job, etc….), although those too have come true! I don’t think there’s any real magic at play here, unless you count the magic of “intention”. It’s the same when I write out my to-do list on paper versus trying to keep mental notes. Seeing the words on paper holds me more accountable than when I just keep open tabs inside my head. Not to mention, I’m not taking up excess brain power worrying about forgetting something in the process. So whether or not you’re a believer, I highly recommend you give it a try! Worst case scenario, it’s just a fun night with friends browsing through magazines – and who can’t get totally get behind that!
